If you’re the type of person that loves to laugh and you haven’t seen “Emma Approved,” then I might just have to slap you around a little bit, so you wake up because it’s nothing less than perfection. And you would be in for such a good time. The series is an adaptation of “Emma,” by Jane Austen.
And it’s the perfect modern day adaptation, drawing you in from the very first episode. Emma Approved has already won an Emmy for Interactive Storytelling. Emma tries to make peoples lives better and unwanted drama tags along. But what happens when she has that moment of “Ahh-ha,” and she learns to open up to the world and maybe, even fall in love. It’s one of those shows where you’re pumped for their weekly uploads on YouTube.(Monday and Thursday in this case for “Emma Approved”). This web series revolves around this bold, difficult, but intelligent young woman, she has extreme expertise in life coaching and especially, matchmaking. Emma and her best friend, better known as “Alex Knightley,” find their thoughts don’t always match up but that’s what makes this series so much fun.
Alex Knightley is played by writer and actor “Brent Bailey,” who was nominated for “Best Male Actor in a comedy Web Series.” And in an EXCLUSIVE interview with Brent Bialy, PCG News learned how grateful he feels about the nomination, stating:
“Anytime you get nominated for an award its a huge honor. Knowing that people appreciate what you’ve done and how hard you’ve worked is a huge pat on the back. In a business with constant scrutiny and rejection, it’s really refreshing to get praise once in a while. Support from friends, family and fans definitely helps keep that fire alive that makes you want to keep fighting for the next job! “
I couldn’t have said it better myself, the industry can be a very difficult career. And it’s always helpful to have a support system. Brent has done such an awesome job on the series. It’s obvious just how much he does appreciate every aspect of the creation process, including making sure his fans are smiling and enjoying the series.
And I bet it feels good being nominated for an award like this, Brent didn’t just wake up and start working as an actor. Just 10 years-ago, he was working at a ‘desk job,’ and he felt like something was missing, he shared, stating:
“I first started to pursue acting 10 years ago. I had a desk job that I was incredibly bored at, and a great life set up in Arizona. But I felt like something was missing and I wasn’t quite sure what it was. I decided to make a big life change and move to LA and just see what happened. My buddy lived there and was acting so I thought that I would give acting a try while I was figuring out my life. Once I got started I realized how much I loved it, and I’ve never looked back. I think the way that you make your dreams become goals, is hard work, persistence and luck!”
And that’s completely true, things don’t happen by chance, they always happen by making changes and having a positive attitude.
Knightley is such a relatable, real-life character. And I feel like that’s why fans love him so much. Brent makes Knightley jump-off that screen with his personality and he always looks just as natural and comfortable as he said he was, stating:
“I really do feel like I got to bring the majority of myself to this role. I have an MBA and a BA in Computer Information Systems. I love business talk and figuring out ways to spend less money and save more money. I am super stubborn, but also would do anything for the people closest to me. I also just feel really comfortable in a shirt and tie. The biggest stretch for me was the khakis!”
Brent loved being the opposite of Joanna Sotomura(Emma), stating:
“Knightley is such a fun character to play, and being opposite of Joanna Sotomura (Emma) was such an amazing experience.
And since it was such a great experience, we had to know, what he would do if he HAD to play a different character and we’re sure you’ll love his answer, he wrote:
“I am really happy that I was cast as Knightley and wouldn’t choose to be anyone else. But if I HAD to be someone else, I’d want to be Emma. I think that it’d be fun to play a character that is so confident and just blindly going into the world thinking that everything is going to be awesome. Then having that big arc when you realize that even though you have the best intentions it may backfire, and everyone may not agree with you. Then finally getting to realize that the person you’re in love with, has been standing In front of you (working beside you) this whole time. Emma is such a great character with so many layers and so much personality. Joanna did a fantastic job riding that fine line of being annoyingly lovable at the beginning, and then really hitting those arcs and creating a fully developed character in the end. “
I mean, I’ve seen it happen, people in life end up having those paradigm shifts. And it’s so cool to watch the person grow and learn from the experience. Emma can be so emotionally grabbing and both Brent and Joanna did a great job making sure the audience felt what they(as actors), felt, you can tell how much effort they put into character development because very character gives you a reason to smile.
When you are in pre-production getting ready to shoot a film you completed writing and polishing, a lot of things are going to go ‘for you’ and ‘against you,’ it’s just a part of the industry. And if you’re good at what you do, your writing skills will show during production and so will your mentality because that’s when things get even harder. If production has taken off then it’s time buckle down because you don’t have all the time in the world.
That alone can make things challenging. But Brent and the whole crew worked hard to keep production flowing by being “prepared.” Filming was the biggest challenge, he wrote:
“The writing was already awesome, and the other actors are great, so the only real challenge about the script was filming 80 pages in two days. You have to be sure you are on top of your game and ready to go. There isn’t enough time to continuously mess up, or to really experiment a whole lot. That doesn’t mean we didn’t make room for spontaneity, but we did go into filming with a good idea of what we wanted to accomplish and we made sure we were prepared to do just that. “
Now that’s what I call, hard work. And I’m so happy that it’s paying off because the cast and crew worked their asses off—and it shows. The fans love it and Brent couldn’t be more thankful, writing:
“I also want to take a second to say thank you! The fans are the reason the show is successful and they are the reason I love what I do. Hearing that we helped make someone’s day better is probably the greatest thing in the whole world. So thank you for taking this journey with me, and I can’t wait for you to see what comes next!”
Brent Bailey fans, prepare because he has some exciting news to share with you:

That’s right his next project is called “LBJ,” it’s “The story of U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson from his young days in West Texas to the White House.” Directed by Rob Reiner, better known for films like “Mixed Nuts,” “North,” Sleepless in Seattle,” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.” The film is set for release in 2016—although there are no specific dates yet, we can expect to see some great talent including, “Woody Harrelson,” “Bill Pullman,” “Michael Stahl-David,” and even “Richard Jenkins.”
It sure sounds like you have some great opportunity ahead of you, great job on landing a supporting role, winning an Emmy, and being nominated for “Best Male Actor in a comedy Web Series,” you deserve it. And we can’t wait to continue to follow you on this positive and fun journey.
