Your Morning Cup of Joe could be saving you from cancer!

It really doesn’t matter whether you like to drink your coffee black, decaf, half-caff or even instant. Drink up because researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center of Keck Medicine of USC have found that coffee consumption decreases the risk of colorectal cancer.

The study examined over 5,100 men and women who have already been diagnosed with colorectal cancer within the last six months—along with 4,000 men and women with no history of colorectal cancer to serve as the control group.

The participants reported that their daily consumption of boiled (espresso), instant, decaffeinated and filtered coffee as well as the other consumed liquids of their choice. The questionnaire also shot to gather information about other health factors that could influence the risk of colorectal cancer, including family history, physical diet and smoking.

Stephen Gruber, MD PhD, MPH and director of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Care Center opened up about the study saying:

“We found that drinking coffee is associated with lower risk of colorectal cancer, and the more coffee consumed, the lower the risk. “

And the collected data even showed that moderate consumption (between 1 or 2 servings a day) associated itself with a 26% reduction in the odds that one may develop colorectal cancer. And the statistics alarmingly showed that if the consumption was increased their risk also decreased even more. Stephen thinks it’s more than just caffeine saying:

“We were somewhat surprised to see that caffeine did not seem to matter,” Gruber said. “This indicates that caffeine alone is not responsible for coffee’s protective properties.”

The fact that coffee contains elements that contribute to colorectal health is great news. I love my cup of Joe. (lol). Caffeine and polyphenol can act as antioxidants and they limit the growth of potential colon cancer cells.

This study will be available in the April 1, 2016 issue of “Cancer Epidemology, Biomarkers & Prevention.” The issue is published by The American Association of Cancer Research.

“While the evidence certainly suggests this to be the case, we need additional research before advocating for coffee consumption as a preventive measure,” Gruber added. That being said, there are few health risks to coffee consumption, I would encourage coffee lovers to revel in the strong possibility that their daily mug may lower their risk of colorectal cancer.”

It’s important to continue the fight against cancer. And research is key because colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women within the United States. Nearly 5% of men and over 4% of women develop this terrible disease over their life-time. The American Cancer Society has estimated that 95,000 new cases of colon cancer and 39,000 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed this year by itself.

The statistics are frightening as so many wonderful people have been taken from this terrible disease. What do you guys think about the study? Do you have your morning cup of Joe? And if you do how do you like it? Let us know in the comments below.

Blessed be.
